Where Did I Go Wrong With SoundBite Communications?
It’s been about two months now since I advocated selling your full position, if you had one, inĀ SoundBite Communications (NASDAQ: SDBT), a provider of on-demand customer contact solutions.
In those couple of months I’ve had time to reflect upon what went wrong with my investment thesis in SoundBite, what I learned from the debacle, and how I can apply those lessons going forward.
My hope is that by sharing these insights with you, you can also strengthen your investing parameters and better understand what goes into my criteria for selecting companies for inclusion into the PeakStocks.com portfolio.
The bottom line is that I goofed with SoundBite, but it doesn’t have to be a lesson lost, and one that we can all benefit from in the long run to become better investors, regardless of your investing objectives or experience.
Top 5 Stocks for October 2008
The tumultuous market has continued to beat down stocks of all shapes and sizes.
This is great news for those of us waiting on the sidelines to put new capital to work.
This month I have a broad range of stocks that I am looking at for possible inclusion into the PeakStocks.com portfolio.
These stocks enter and exit my Top 5 as constant fluctuations in both price, market conditions, and business fundamentals constantly alter the investment thesis.
Today I wanted to give you a heads up on some of the stocks that I was watching for possible inclusion into my portfolio, specifically ones that are high on my list, and most likely to be added as formal recommendations in the weeks to come as they reach desirable price points, and present wonderful opportunities for long term investors.
Please note that my Top 5 Stocks for October aren’t yet formal recommendations.
I have more due diligence that I have to perform on them, but they are compelling enough with the research that I have done to be at the absolute top of my list, at least as of this writing.
SoundBite Communications: It’s Time To Sell
That’s it, we’re done.
It’s time to liquidate your entire position in SoundBite Communications (NASDAQ: SDBT), a leading provider of on-demand customer contact solutions.
What I heard on today’s conference call, coupled with the Q2 results and forward guidance leave me little choice but to cut-bait and put our money to work in a better company, with better prospects, better management, and better fundamentals.
What follows is a summary of SoundBite’s earnings announcement, conference call highlights, and my reasons for selling my shares in the company.
SoundBite Communications: Back on Track, or Continued Disappointment?
Next on the docket of companies that I cover set to report earnings is SoundBite Communications (NASDAQ: SDBT), which reports Wednesday August 6th after the market closes.
Last quarter SoundBite severely disappointed not only me, but judging from the precipitous stock price decline, a bunch of other folks on Wall Street as well.
It’s put up or shut up time for SoundBite.
What’s it gonna be this time around?
Improvement in the business trends and fundamentals, or continued disappointment and a diminished outlook?
Either way, it’s decision time on Soundbite.
In this post I’ll go over the important aspects that we need to be aware of before SoundBite announces earnings and then break them down into the following parameters:
- What went right in the quarter: What were some of the positive developments that occurred within the company in the last 3 months.
- What went wrong in the quarter: What were some of the negative developments that occurred within the company in the last 3 months.
- What I want to see: All things considered, what I realistically want to see from the company as it relates to their business.
- What we need to see: At the minimum, what we need to see for our investing thesis to still hold and an investment in this company to be prudent.
- What we’ll probably see: After weighing what’s been going on for the last 3 months, what we can realistically expect when they do announce their earnings.
- Bottom Line: What it all means, and what you should do.
It’s Over: URS Settles Claims With SoundBite for $4.6 Million
It looks like there will be one less distraction for management at SoundBite Communications (NASDAQ: SDBT), a leading provider of on-demand customer contact solutions that include Automated Voice Messaging, Text Messaging, and other customer contact solutions.
After the market closed on June 25th, 2008, SoundBite announced that they reached a settlement agreement with Universal Recovery Systems, Inc. (URS), the owner of the Universal Systems Right Party Contact Solution, a patented approach to maximizing right party contacts.
SoundBite Communications: A Big Mess, or a Golden Opportunity?
SoundBite Communications (Nasdaq: SDBT), a leading provider of on-demand customer contact solutions, recently reported their Q1/2008 earnings, and the subsequent disappointment and stock collapse led to much head scratching.
I followed up with SoundBite’s management team to clarify some things that were said on the conference call, in addition to talking more about the business, the future, and to help understand whether or not we should hang on to our shares of SoundBite for another quarter or cut bait now.
What follows are the questions that I asked SoundBite’s management (In Bold), and their responses to those questions (paraphrased).
I Was Flat Wrong About SoundBite: Bombs Q1/2008 Earnings, Lowers Guidance
It looks like I’ll be eating my first dose of humble pie since I started PeakStocks.com about 7 months ago. In a business where if you get slightly over 50% of your picks right, you attain rock star status, it looks like we’ll be adding SoundBite to the “losing” side of the scorecard, at least for now.
SoundBite Communications (Nasdaq: SDBT), a leading provider of on-demand customer contact solutions, reported its fiscal 1st quarter 2008 earnings on Wednesday May 7th after the market closed, and to say they were bad would probably not serve the word “bad” properly.
Not only did SoundBite miss their own guidance and estimates for the first quarter, but they also LOWERED guidance for Q2/2008, AND full-year 2008, only 3 months after they had raised that same guidance.
So is it time to sell SoundBite and cut our losses? Maybe…
What follows is a brief summary of SoundBite’s earnings announcement and conference call, with my solemn thoughts at the end.
Look for a full report on their latest quarter and analyst conference call highlights in a few weeks after they release their latest 10-Q filing and I have a chance to parse the data fully. Read the rest of this entry »
BUY ALERT: SoundBite Communications (Nasdaq: SDBT) BUY 1/4 Position 5/1/08 Around $4.00
What:

Sometimes the market presents us with a deal, and we need to be ready to pounce.
SoundBite Communications Q4/2007 Company Update: It’s Time To Buy
A more thorough and detailed analysis of SoundBite Communication’s (Nasdaq: SDBT) last quarterly and full-year 2007 report and reevaluation of the company’s financials and fundamentals, have only reinforced my original investment thesis.
SoundBite is the dominant player in their niche (Automated Voice Messaging/Customer Contact Solutions), growing faster than their overall market and taking market share away from competitors.
In addition, their dirt cheap valuation relative to their fundamentals leaves me scratching my head as to how Wall Street can be so wrong about this company, and compels me to re-recommend SoundBite as an immediate BUY.
If you haven’t already done so, you need to add shares of SoundBite to your portfolio, here’s why: Read the rest of this entry »
SoundBite Communications: Record Profits, Beats Estimates, Guides Higher, Makes Acquisition
SoundBite Communications (Nasdaq: SDBT) reported its fiscal 4th quarter and full year 2007 earnings on Wednesday February 27th.
Not only did SoundBite post record profits and revenue and handily beat estimates, but they also raised guidance for Q1/2008, AND full-year 2008, while also announcing an acquisition that will be immediately beneficial to their platform and future product offerings to their customers.
